“Suicide… it’s the one mistake you won’t live to regret.” This quote was said by an unknown author. More students are killing themselves because of depression, bullying, stress, and mental illnesses. It is becoming a huge issue because more and more teens are killing themselves. An estimated one million people commit suicide every year worldwide. That means on average, one person commits suicide roughly every 16 minutes. Each of the suicides intimately affects, at least, six other people. In fact, more people die in the U.S. by suicide than in car accidents. Saying that, should schools check children and teens for signs of suicidal tendencies?....Of course! They feel as though when their children are exposed they are more likely to consider suicide. However, there are many reasons why we should screen children. Stopping the exposure is one thing. The University of Ottowa states they found that teens with exposure,-knowing that people know that they are suicidal are more likely to think about or attempt suicide than those with no exposure, but their information would not be exposed to other people. It is just giving them a heads up and help so they don’t decide to do it. Another thing we could do is prevent suicide from happening. Because there have been many cases of suicide lately we have to start preventing it. Here are three tips from helpguide.org to prevent this from happening. Tip number one,-offer help and support. Let them know that they aren’t alone and that you do care. Although you may want to find someone you trust and get some support of your own. Don’t take responsibility for the cause, however, make them feel loved. It takes a lot of courage to help someone who is suicidal. And taking that risk can be a hard decision, but just one act can save a life. Tip number two,-respond quickly in a crisis. If a friend or family member tells you that he or she is thinking about death or suicide, it is very important to evaluate the immediate danger the person is in. They have a specific plan and are going to stick to that plan, a time set for doing it, and an intention when doing it. When being alerted to this, immediately take action and help this person. And lastly tip number three,-speak up if you’re worried. You may spot the warning signs of suicide in someone you care about, and you may wonder if it’s a good idea to even say anything. Well, what if your wrong. The best thing to do is talk to them about it and help as much as possible. The sooner the better. So take action today. It
