Victor Cartagena Sugar Face Analysis

The one piece of art that pique my interest was the “Sugar Face”, by Victor Cartagena during the exploration of the San Jose Museum of Art. Born in 1966, at El Salvador, Cartagena is an established acclaimed multimedia artist acknowledged for his campaign having an interest on the migrant workers and the injustice of the renowned corporations having their success built from the strenuous act of reaping sugars. Born as a Salvadoran, Cartagena’s work were showcased in the Bay Area since the late 80s. Not to mention, faced adversities with the crisis in El Salvador and the stress of transitioning from El Salvador to the U.S. Furthermore, Cartagena was a member of the Tamoanchȧn, a cohesive group of Latin American printmakers. Due to his upbringing, Cartagena shifted his effort solely illustrating the struggle of immigrants. The context of the sculpture “Sugar Face”, depicts a three dimensional face of an actual worker Maurillo Maravilla, a Mexican immigrant who worked alongside with Cesar Chavez. This sculpture is conceived of sugar as a sign of tribute to those who put their sweat and tears for the major companies. Moreover, the features …show more content…
However, the one that intrigued me the most was the “Sugar Face”. The reason why I was profound of this sculpture was due to my curiosity of trying to seek the significance of its lesson. In addition, how the sculpture was exhibited during the trip of the museum with the unpleasant expression of agony while the sculpture slowly decompose right before my very own eye. In my opinion, I view the sculpture aesthetically pleasing due to the amount of endeavor Cartagena had to put into his art in order to express every inch of detail on the face with the cross hatching on the model and the facial expression especially stimulating a sense of sympathy from the audience towards the immigrant

Tastefully developed and carefully curated, The Meadows Museum at Southern Methodist University now holds one of the largest collections of Spanish art outside of Spain. The museum prides itself on displaying widely diversified paintings, a statement I do not fully agree with. Although the two-story museum’s walls are furnished with with a wide variety of subject content there is a chauvinistic sense about their collections. I am not saying there is an unequal ratio of male to female portraits because there isn’t. The museum has a plethora of women as subjects, but they only seem to only display women painted by men.…

The "Anatomy Series" was the most interesting piece I appreciated on my visit to the Perez Art Museum Miami. Roberto Fabelo, a Cuban painter, is the author of this peculiar series of drawings. This set of art is based on pages from an Anatomy book with certain representation of human organs and systems. The author uses the original drawing in the page to recreate and integrate it to his own creation. Fabelo's peculiar style gives as a result a series of smart, graphically detailed, bold, spicy creatures: half human, half divine.…

Looking at the Peplos Kouros and the Kouros, one can tell that the time span between the two sculptures had a lot to do with how people would have perceived them. In a today’s more modern society, Huffington’s Kouros is seen as the representation of the female body with the comparison of the Archaic Peplos Kouros given its similarities of medium and style. These two pieces have many similarities, but one thing that sets them apart is the own artist’s intentions for the sculpture in each of their own time eras. While the Peplos Kouros shows the start of curiosity of the female body, Huffington’s Kouros shows it’s audience the pure naturalistic elements of what is the female…

The Conquest in 1492 brought a number of changes to Latin America. In particular, art in New Spain was largely influenced by its European counterparts. As a result, a number of artists were trained in European painting styles. Miguel Cabrera had this upbringing in the art world. Throughout these many years, I am born during the year that claims me to be a millennial child; a millennial is someone who is approximately born around early 1980s to early 2000s. I have experienced the uprising of technology, diversity, and the exploration of art for the masses. As an art major I have been to various galleries and seen various arts through media and the affects it has on consumerism. However, this discussion draws my attention to The Great Wall of Los Angeles in relation to Judith Baca’s work on it. Made during the summers in the late 1970s and finishing around early 1980s ; it was a project that most likely will not have an ending and will continue to be a project passed down to the youths and artists of the future.…

I chose to analyze “A Subtlety”. “ A Subtlety” is a striking huge sculpture. It uses all organic shapes to make the body. Although the sculpture is all white I believe it is because of the light or lack thereof in the sugar factory. This brings a strong contrast from the dark surroundings in the factory so that the sculpture will be the main focus.…

As pieces of art go, not every piece can be considered easy to look at. In fact, most are considered unpleasant and difficult to understand with a deeper meaning that is hidden within it. The selection for this assignment is a painting titled Seated Bather (La Baigneuse) by the great Pablo Picasso. The artwork in question is an abstract painting of a young woman, made out of a series of shapes that come together in form of the painting. This women that is shown is said to be of Picasso’s wife, Olga Koklova, a Russian ballerina he married in 1918.…
