Substance Dependence: A Case Study

In order for an individual to be diagnosed as having a substance use disorder with or without withdrawal, they first must have to be examine to determine if they meet the criteria for substance dependence or substance abuse. The criteria for substance dependence and substance abuse are listed below.
Substance dependence:
For an individual to meet the criterial for substance dependence, they must maladaptive pattern of substance usage, leading to a significant clinically impairment or distress, which is manifested by having three or more of the following features within a 12-month time frame:
Individual has developed a tolerance for the substance. This means they need to increase the amount to achieve the desired effect or to reduce the effect.
