Substance abuse has been on a rise of adolescents, especially between the ages of 15 and 18. Due to the high rates, it is important to find out what contributes to the factors of substance abuse and put them at risk for this type of behavior. Research has been shown that sleep insufficiently and depression has been found to have higher rates related to substance abuse in this age group. There were four major substances that were used for this study, but this paper will focus on the marijuana and alcohol usage. Knowing that education and teamwork is the key to keep this age group aware of the severity of the substance abuse and the factors of what could happen, will keep these kids safe and from making poor choices. These students do not have a clinical diagnosis but have symptoms of depression, ie. Feeling of sad and hopelessness. In a study that was conducted, depression levels were associated with an increased likely hood of use of cigarettes, marijuana, alcohol, etc. for a life time (Pang, Farrahi, Glazier, Sussman, & Leventhal, 2014, p. 42). Both the alcohol and marijuana were both at p<.001. Students that have shown symptoms of depression and used substances has been found to be just about doubled than the rate of students who have had no depression symptoms. The study resulted that a student who has felt depressed, were more likely to use a substance. Depression can be a hard thing to overcome, and at such a difficult age when you’re trying to figure yourself out and being prone to risky behavior, these children use drugs or try the drug to make themselves feel better as if the pain and feelings would go way. A QSEN competency would be that education by nurses and providers need to be improved. Students need to be taught about the substances and what they can do to the body. In a different study, it shows that adolescent whose parents were more involved has a smaller percentage as to doing the substances. Providing programs that will be acceptable and associable is a major part of the to make sure that families get involved to help these children.
