Because the system has been changed to focus so much on testing and test results, teachers have learned to teach for the test. As opposed to teaching for the sake of knowledge, or teaching critical thinking teachers are doing what they can to speed through as much material as they can where the students will be able to pass the test. With constant testing, teachers are constantly being watched and tested as much as the students themselves. Today teachers must prove themselves through test scores. No more are the days where teachers could teach the students skills with which the students can themselves learn so much more than the teacher could have taught in the limited time a classroom provides. No more are the days when the teacher could focus on each student as in individual. Today the teacher must show impressive test scores to be validated.
The advocates will say that testing and the resulting pressure are the only way to bring about excellence; how else do we ensure that our children and students are learning as much as much as they can, and that our teachers are teaching as much as they can, they will argue.
