Students can open up on their thoughts and feelings towards their challenges and work to make changes to the campus culture. Together the support group can change the perception of students with disabilities and find other ways to cope with the challenges than partying. The support group would be open to all students. This would encourage students who do not have learning disabilities to understand how challenging it is. Together the students can advocate for change. As stated in Holland’s Theory of Vocational Personalities and Environments, the concept of congruence refers to the degree of “match” between a person and an environment (Evans, 232). Having a support group to try to find a “match” between two students with the same disability or just two students in general would be a significant help for students who tend to use social drinking as an …show more content…
Some staff members lack the understanding of the student’s disability and brush it off as another excuse for the student to not want to take the test. Other faculty members might doubt their ability to teach a student with a disability because of their lack of understanding the specific needs. At Iowa State University many students with disabilities have blamed their professors for their increase in socially drinking. When a professor does not understand the student’s disability, they should ask for assistance. A counselor from the disabilities office could meet with the professor to go over some ways the professor and student could create accommodations
