Having a job and going to college can be stressful and tiring but it helps you learn how to balance your life. Working during college has many benefits. Many students feel that taking on a part-time job will distract from their studies at school. It can seem overwhelming to take on a part-time or full-time job while going to school, but it is possible to do this. The choice to work during college. Although it does take extra effort to hold down a job and still get good grades, you can do it (9). For example, when high school students are working there certain rules and laws the company has to follow when hiring teens because of child labor laws. Teens who are 14 to 15 can work in retail, food service and lifeguarding, Three hours or less on school days and 18 hours or less per week when school is in session (4). Students that work in high school learn how to manage their money by learning when to spend it and how much to save, as well as the necessities and wants. Let's say between a student who don’t work and gets money from their parents and one who does have a job with their own money, the student who gets money from a parent will most likely spend it on whatever they want and not care but a student with the job will want to save and spend it own necessities. Once someone save money it can help reduce the reliance on student loans. Americans owe over $1.3 trillion in student loan debt, spread out among about 44 million borrowers. In fact, the average class of 2016 graduate has $37,172 in student loan debt, up six percent from last year (16). Student loans can cause a college student to go in debt rather they know it or not, that’s why it’s important for a college student to understand the concept of managing their money. Student loans is the last thing someone want to look for while in college. Paying off student loans can sometimes take up to years. Furthermore, once they mastered the concept of money management and the reliance of student loans the responsibility starts to kick in. Being a good student takes a lot of responsibility but if you learn how to balance school studies/activities and a part-time job, you will learn the true meaning of responsibility. As you grow older, your amount of responsibilities will only increase so learning how to multitask at an early age will better prepare you for the future (13).
