Student Behavior Contract Paper

There was one student in the classroom that had extreme behavioral issues. This student was placed in a program the school has that gives the students behavior contracts that the teacher needs to fill out daily. This specific student was always being put on timeout and being called out for his actions in front of the entire class. I noticed that when this student would act out or disrupt the class, my mentor teacher would automatically assume the worst and give him a poor score on his behavior contract for the day. This would just upset the student even further and would make him act out more throughout the day. My mentor teacher’s assumptions about this specific student’s behavior definitely had a negative effect on the student’s learning because he would constantly be missing classroom instruction due to being on timeout. I noticed that whenever the student was placed on timeout or was called out in front of the class, he would feel discouraged.

One of the days that I had come into the classroom, the class had a substitute teacher for half the day. This substitute teacher was very calm and understanding and knew that this student was on a behavior contract. As soon as the day started, the substitute teacher quietly turned to the student on the

The student that was placed on the behavior contract acted a lot better in class when he was receiving positive feedback. The positive feedback helped keep him on task and focused throughout the day. He did not get called out in front of the class for misbehaving or get put on timeout. Instead, the substitute teacher calmly talked to him privately. She handled the situation in a positive way which really helped the student with his behavior. This day, I noticed a huge improvement in the student’s behavior and his
