Autism Self Management Skills

Students with Autism often struggle with self-regulation strategies, motivation, and task completion. In order for a student to develop skills to overcome these dilemmas it has been proven that direct instruction is the key. When you take the consistent variable of the direct instructions, students with Autism struggle maintaining that focus. Self-management skills are gained when a student or person is aware of his/her behaviors, can monitor those behaviors and keep them in check. When he/she is able to keep those behaviors in check, reward him/her self. It’s at this time that a student or person who focuses on his/her own behaviors instead of task completions that student/person is more likely to develop new skills in various settings. These skills were brought on by problem-based learning. This learning style has the students developed a learning goal and as they work to achieve this goal, the student would develop a plan to achieve their learning goal. As a result, it gets the student to think about what they’re learning about as opposed to going through the motions of reading the text and answering questions. It’s a deeper thought process. They must look into what study habits work best for them and then go about doing the studying process to achieve their goal. They become engaged about how they learn and what they learn other than seeing learning as something they have to do to get by. The study showed that the more the students spent on taking responsibility for their learning the more self-management skills they developed. The more self-management skills the students developed the better their grades were. The students stated that they gained control of the instruction being taught and they can better rely on themselves for
