In the novel “the Giver” by Lois Lowry tells of an unusual way of life. The community is unaware that there is more to life then what is currently taking place. Therefore, an example of their way of life, the parents are not really their birth parents. “The Giver is set in a perfect world of the future. This Utopian community is free of disease, prejudice, and crime, but it is also missing diversity, memories, and love.” (Franklin)The parents are more in what we would consider a guardian role and are unaware they are not true parents. The parents are given the title as mother and father in this society in which they live. Structured life is seen throughout the novel as choices that they are unaware of and are laid out before them. Therefore, the way of life for the community is structured in all facets. The novel,” the Giver”, states how families are structured of, “Two children-- one male, one female-- to each family unit. It was written very clearly in the rules.” (8, Lowry) Showing this structure is all each member of the community knows with the exception of the Giver. Everything is very calculated by the committee.
