Most importantly, play therapy or client centered therapy may be the catalyst of change for Anna’s disinhibited social engagement. Meaning that Anna may develop appropriate friendships, learn how to interact with adults appropriately, and form a healthy bond with her mother and step-father. The clinician also has the ability to make appropriate referrals for resources that will be beneficial to Anna’s learning. He or she can recommend and Admissions Review and Dismissal (ARD) meeting to determine whether Anna needs special education services, more challenging work, or a transfer to a different school. Anna’s inability to thrive with normally with other children may or may not be a direct indicator that she is developmentally delayed; however, research showed that children who have an inability to thrive may be advanced for his or her age and bored with the coursework.
