The report of the Institute of Medicine was done to research prevention of disease, improvement on the outcome of health, wellness promotion, and providing compassionate care over the lifespan of an individual. Nursing covers a wide field of areas varying from care coordination to prevention of illness to palliative care to health promotion. And the roles are constantly changing with our continuing reformed healthcare system. Nurses are working and becoming more involved in patient teaching, public health involvement, management and coordination of patient care, and transitional care as less emphasis is put on acute care and is now becoming more centered on management and prevention instead. But in order to help transform the current health care system, strong leadership will be essential. Nurses will be needed that have the adaptive ability to undertake reconceptualized responsibilities in new settings while learning new practices pertaining to vital characteristics of being a successful leader. (Committee on the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Initiative on the Future of Nursing, 2011) Findings have shown that leadership, even in undergraduate nursing education, increases the potential nurse’s abilities to carry out their duties and have distinction and liberation in the work environment, showing greater chances of success and career development. (Ribeiro Neves & Sanna, 2016) Nurses in most any career circumstance have the well-grounded education base, outlook, and experience needed in the health care redesign to become a full partner. This involves resposibility in problem solving, development and application of improvement plans, tracking the advancement of this improvement, and making the as needed changes to meet the intended goals. As well, if nurses intend to work as full partners, a culture change will be necessary so as health care workers work together with mutual respect and cooperation, all with the set goal in mind for continued improvement of care and setting health
