In early July, the death of a civilian under the hands of the police in the U.S. occurred. Philando Castile, who was only 32 years old, was fatally shot by police officers from the passenger seat of his girlfriend’s car. According to an ABC News article by Julia Jacobo and Enjoli, the police officer planned to stop the vehicle Castile was in because he unethically assumed that Castile and the driver were robbers based on racial profiling (par. 4). After the officer killed Castile, the driver live-streamed the aftermath scene on her Facebook account and states that the officer assumed Castile was pulling out a gun instead of his wallet and shot him four times in the process. Philando Castile was fatally shot based on uncertain and false pretences.…
It’s no secret that Police Officers have one of the most stressful and worrisome job in the world. This is a profession that requires to master both cognitive thinking and physical ability on top of the daily changing social pressures that every officer has to deal with on a day to day basis especially in today’s watchful political eye. Members of the police are expected to not only be perfect law abiding citizens both on and off duty but they are also expected to be supermen with an absolute knowledge of how to react in certain situations. It’s not enough for a police officer to be physically trained for the entirety of a month (not including high school and college education) it takes a degree of awareness of what tool would be best to use in the right situation.…

I would have to say that high caseloads are the main source of stress. It is no wonder that officers with heavy caseloads are the most stressful at work because they have a lot of cases to deal with. Paperwork follows as the next most major stress factor for many officers. Deadlines, many of which are unexpected or can’t be controlled, are the third most common stress factor. These sources of stress typically combine to produce an infuriating result, such as not enough time to supervise caseloads correctly.…
We as citizens are united. We have shaped today's criminal judicial system for the last 50 years through generations of witnessing, voicing our perceptions of how we will feel towards the safety and freedom relating to our everyday lives as a whole community that involves the safety of all involved but also including our individual rights as humans regardless. This started back in the earliest of time when we were subjected by the British laws that were mostly punishments and processed unfairly. Then came our constitution and we have molded our laws since with the police, the courts and corrections. Our police force risk their lives everyday for our freedom and safety from each other and from outside the states intruders and or invaders.…
In the same way, these psychological effects affect victims’ lives. According to Mitchell, “Psychological stress often consumes many facets of victims’ lives, adversely affecting job performance, ability to sustain employment, and everyday interactions with family and associates.” This suggests that due to the psychological disorder caused by police brutality, victims may experience trouble completing their tasks at work, which can cause them to lose their job. Also, symptoms like stress and depression can lead the victims to communication problems and bad relationship with family members, friends,…
The Washington Times looked into this very issue and those interviewed for the article focused on one are for improvement: training. Officers need to understand their role in society as one of a protector of society and enforcer of law, and not a role in society that they are a tough guy with a badge and gun. From there, the training often times for police agencies is focused on the physical aspects of the job like taking down a person, handcuffing,…

One of the most honorable profession someone can have in society is being a police officer. This is because they maintain society by enforcing laws and regulations so that total chaos doesn’t erupt. However, this also makes this profession one of the most dangerous in the world and can take its toll on the officer. After the years of being on duty these tolls on the officers take its toll by reducing their overall mental health and overall happiness. One book that provides a massive amount of insight on how these problems begin to take place throughout the career of a police officer is called, “Emotional Survival for Law Enforcement” written by Kevin Gilmartin.…

However, there are many more factors that contribute to an accidental or intentional use of excessive and sometimes deadly force. One of them is lack of proper training and adequate control in police departments (Lee & Vaughn, 2010, p.193). For instance, some police departments failed to provide their officers with training where they would acquire communication skills regarding mentally ill or emotionally unstable individuals (p.201). Lastly, Bernasconi (2014, p.146) suggested that the media also play a large role in the exaggeration of facts and overrepresentation of certain individuals that can induce police officers’ emotions of fear and leads them to commit thoughtless split-second decisions. All things considered, there are many social,…
