Strength Within

“I washed my hands, put on a new Band-Aid , but now I was being pulled all the way down. I opened the medicine cabinet quietly. Took out the aloe-scented hand sanitizer. I took a gulp, then another. Felt dizzy. You can’t do this. This stuff’s pure alcohol.”,which was located on page 210. When someone has a mental illness they will try to find the strength to resist it. John Green and Robert Longley both wrote two different pieces ,but also they compare in many different ways. Although John Green book, Turtles all the way down, is a book that is related to mental illness and Robert Longley poem, Strength Within, was based off his friend father's cancer ,but they both have the same meaning behind them. Both Green and

In Greens novel he shows the message of the writing by using dialogue that Aza is thinking. Green uses the dialogue to prove that aza is trying to fight her thoughts. This is one way Green revealed the theme, “But that stuff has alcohol in it that my damaged liver will have to process.DO YOU WANT TO DIE OF C.DIFF no but this is not rational.”,which was located on page 228. In Longley poem he reveals the theme of the poem by using metaphors. Longley also uses metaphors to show how challenges in life can be overcome because it happened in his own life. One way he show the theme with metaphors is in this line, “And you will find new purpose / And ways to grow / These are the seeds I’ve planted.” That was an example because Longley was relating how people can overcome things to seeds that he has …show more content…
John Green's book relates to the theme ,strength comes within, as a whole by explaining Aza life crisis and how she wants to overcome her mental illness ,but it is really hard for her to fight the feeling that is bacteria in her body. In Robert Longley poem relates to the theme because Longley used the strength he had in within him when he had a crisis with close friends. Both the authors of the literature pieces made very relatable topics even though they are both based on very different topics ,but relate to each other in a lot of ways. When I was reading both of the writings, I could predict that they were going to end very well and that it seemed like both authors made these two pieces of literature together at the same time ,but they didn’t. John Green wrote his book recently, October 10, 2017 and Robert Longley wrote Strength Within a couple of years before. In a couple years two authors could still write about the same subject that strength comes within people. The significance of John Green writing his book showed people that no matter what happens people just need to try really hard to overcome it. The value of Robert Longley poem showed others that they can get over their challenges because Longley got over an

In the beginning of the poem, Bradstreet is sleeping during a calm and quiet night, and then suddenly, she wakes up by “thund’ring noise / And piteous shrieks of dreadful voice” (lines 3-4). She then sees that her house is burning in fire. Terrified, she cries out to God and prays so that God would help her. Her house eventually got entirely burned up, and Bradstreet ended up homeless, but she did not lose hope. She began to pull herself together and realized that God took away something that didn’t belong to her anyway.…

Argumentative Essay Paul Laurence Dunbar’s famous poem, We Wear the Mask, is a sentimental and symbolic poem that refers to the times individuals hide behind masks for various reasons. However, many critics think that this poem only applies to individuals who suffered from slavery. Because many of Dunbar’s poems do reflect images of slavery, some critics argue that “we” in the poem “We Wear the Mask” is referring to slaves. The poet is including himself as a part of the human race rather than speaking from personal experience. Again, critics will argue that the speaker is including himself within his race of people who endured slavery.…

Two Narrative Poems that can easily be compared are “The Listeners” and “The Cremation of Sam McGee”. In the Narrative Poem The Listeners, The Traveler, despite his fears and worries about the abandoned house that he made a promise to visit, kept his word instead of being scared away. In the poem The Cremation of Sam McGee the “captain” of Sam McGee’s expedition to mine for gold promises Sam that if he is to die then he will cremate him. Sam McGee being from Tennessee is afraid of the cold adds humor for the reason that he wished to be cremated to avoid an “icy grave”.…

“Song of Powers” is a poem I selected because I liked the way the author set it up. It takes an ordinary game, rock-paper-scissors, and makes it into a metaphor. To me, this poem is about putting aside your own personal desires and strengths to live in harmony with the others around you. Each, rock, paper, and scissor, has their own strength, but in the end, they all destroy each other and end the poem on their own, which is the caution the author has for the reader. The poems tone is somewhat boastful in the beginning, where each shape in the game touts their own strengths.…

The poem “Her Kind” by Anne Sexton and “For My Daughter” by Weldon Kees share similar concepts of gender inequality, but in very different ways. Sexton’s poem is written from a woman’s point of view, while Kees’s is from the male perspective. Written by the opposite gender, and only twenty years apart, both poems share the same outlook on gender inequality: women are less superior to men. Sexton uses the symbol of a witch to portray the view that women hold offensive power, and Kees’s fake daughter expresses that girls are inferior to men.…

Compare and contrast the way the poets explore the theme of discrimination in ‘Disabled’ and ‘Still I Rise’. Both poets portray the theme of discrimination expressing their memories about key moments in their lives. Owen faced World War 1 at a young age and saw enough pain and suffering for more than a lifetime. On the other hand, he still gained experience from this and shared the loneliness of discrimination with other people. Angelou, however was abused at a very young age which saw her muted for over 5 years; in this time she was isolated from everyone until she found poetry as a medium to express her thoughts and feelings about discrimination.…
