Straightedge Vs Pop Punk

Improved Essays
Over the past couple years, I have started to become the person I have always wanted to be, i.e. straightedge and pop punk. Through the use of the medium, Tumblr, I was able to get a tighter grasp on what I believe in and enjoy. Seeing all my friends in high school start drinking and smoking at a young age made me hate drugs and alcohol even more. I never really fit in with the crowd because I did not go to parties and get wasted. All of my friends thought I was a lame or “prude” because I did not want to get in trouble or poison my body with harmful chemicals. It took until my senior year of high school to figure out what I really believed in; straightedge. To bring to simple terms, straightedge is a choice and a lifestyle; abstaining from drinking, smoking, drugs and lying. People think it is silly, being eighteen years young and considering myself as a straightedge. Well, it may be a secret, but many kids start drinking and doing drugs as young as fourteen. A lot of the lyrics are very cliché, such as leaving their home town, missing the one they used to love, or just simply anchors. I did not actually fall in love with it until my boyfriend, Jacob, brought me to this music festival called Warped Tour. Everyone there was so friendly and accepting, unlike anywhere I have ever been before. We made so many new friends and fell in love with tons of new bands. The very first pop punk band I had ever seen was Knuckle Puck. It was also the first mosh pit I had ever gone into. Being only 5’3” and one hundred pounds, going into a mosh pit is a bit hazardous and frowned upon, but with my Jacob being 6’3”, he watched out for me and kept all the three hundred pound people away. I had never had such a rush of adrenaline in my life. Feeling accepted by everyone, not being judged for my size or life

When reading the title of one of the colloquia series, "College Hookup Culture and Christian Ethics", I had a certain preconceived idea of what I would expect from this presentation. Personally, I thought the speaker would be an incredibly devout woman who was going to criticize the ways of college students, because current college norms do go against Catholicism. However, the speaker, Jennifer Beste, was understanding of how our culture has transformed and relayed this information in an insightful way. This was not to say she agreed with this new way of college life, but just that times have truly changed from her years in school. From the culture I have experienced thus far this year, Beste's findings were very accurate.…

Natural highs always come to every single person in their lifetime and they stick with that mostly the rest of their lives. For me, a definition of a natural high is that it is something a person loves doing so much that in a way they get high. My natural high was found early in my life at the age of four; it was swimming. I still remember the first time I met the pool; it was an inflatable tube pool that was about 5 feet deep and I was learning to swim.…

For my substance use interview I chose to talk with my mother, Megean. I set out to cover the following topics: the role substance abuse played in her life, her opinion on drinking and substance use, and how she thinks alcohol and other substances will affect my life. Through the course of this interview and the time I spent reflecting on it, the severity of overindulging with things such as alcohol became much clearer. It is important to know where to draw the line and when to walk away completely. Exposure to substances like alcohol and drugs seem to have been just as prevalent during my parent’s high school years as it has been mine.…

Ever since I can remember, I was always the stoner kid. Before I even knew what weed was, ignorant kids labeled me as a pot-head. My baggy skater boy clothes, my Scooby-Doo like hair, and the classic rock blaring from my headphones all pointed at me smoking weed. Well, at some point in my high school career, this stereotype became a reality, and I made some unwise choices that would follow me the rest of my life. One of these decisions was bringing pot brownies to school.…

It is often said that teenagers begin discovering themselves in high school, but I did the opposite- I lost myself. The source of my pleasure and delight shifted from books to parties, writing to boys, and video-games to my social life. Something within me desperately craved to be normal- to no longer be the girl that gets harassed and ostracized for being an “appalling nerd” and because of this, vital aspects of my personality began to change and I morphed into an entirely different person. Through this journey, I learned that my self-hate was a catalyst for self-love and appreciation. Having always been considered an unusual girl in the eyes of my peers, I'd never been truly comfortable in my skin.…

In terms of illness, I always have a few colds throughout the year, the occasional fever, and I had asthma. We all listened to the same bands, loved the same teen heartthrob, and all had a similar personality. It took losing a core group of friends of mine transitioning into freshman year to show me that it’s okay to be your own person. I will say freshman year was a huge struggle for me to go through without being friends with the people that I had grown closest to in the 8th grade and years prior to 9th grade, but in the long run it has benefitted me more than I could have ever imagined that year. I now am not afraid to be alone sometimes and not always hang out with a group of people or one person every weekend. I’m okay with spending time by myself just relaxing in my room or grabbing some lunch at bread co by myself when I can.…
