In the African American community, amongst women, the term “natural” when we speak of our hair, means that the state of our hair is chemical, relaxer and perm free. When black women say that, “my hair is natural”, the most common, automatic vision of our hair is nappy or a curly afro. This has proven to not be true for all women of color. Many people don’t like to embrace their curly hair, no matter the color of their skin. It seems as if we have all been brainwashed to believe that straightened hair is more appealing and presentable. Since 2005 approximately, women began to have an urge to express their roots by chopping off their hair or as we call it the “big chop”, and starting all over again, letting our hair grow in its natural state. Sites like Instagram really has been a go to for women who are thinking of going natural, transitioning naturals, and those who already have started their natural hair journey. Social sites such as Instagram create a visual with pictures and videos of black women with different textured hair, styles and how they care for their natural hair. This page’s involvement in natural hair journeys is important because it provides new ideas for hairstyles because being someone that’s new to having naturally curly hair, we can constantly get confused of what to do with our hair on the daily basis.
