“The storyteller” is an article by Sandra Cisneros about her life journey beginning from post graduate school to a school teacher. In between she writes about her life in the point of views of a dependent, a growing writer, and a teacher, with short descriptions that gives the reader a glimpse of her mentality on each stage. All that is mixed up into the life of an average Hispanic woman from Chicago. Looking back on my passed five years of knowing Jesus I would describe it as a rollercoaster ride. I called upon my college advisor, Dr. Downs, to inform me on better ways of integrating faith and learning. Through a series of questions, Dr. Downs advised me that the best advice is for me to look at my studies as a story that allows me to dig deep and find myself while also demonstrating to others how to do the same thing. Dr. Downs also reinstated to me that I must always rely upon a Faith-Learning Integration model when approaching the classroom. He proclaims that the best model that works for him is the Equal Authorities Model as he states: “This model proclaims that it is through the Bible and the general knowledge works that allow for historians to demonstrate equal authority between their beliefs and their general works.” Finally, Dr. Downs informed me of two prominent resources that I can look back to to understand how others were able to important their Christian faith into their major, just as I am.…
Many people don’t know what they want to be when they “grow up”, as for my mother she didn’t know what type of religion she wanted to be in when she “grew up”. However, she did know the basics that she believed in which was God, the Holy Spirit, his son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Bible that being said she considered herself Christian and raised me as a Non-Denominational Christian. That was until my senior year of High School when my mom decided she no longer wanted to be part of the Non-Denominational Christian faith and switched over to becoming part of the LDS faith known as the Mormons and flipped my life upside-down with their different views of norms and values. I am writing to you on behalf of your novel The Storyteller, which I recently read in the context of a seminar at Georgetown University. I thoroughly enjoyed your presentation and problematization of Westernization and the constancy of culture among many other themes, in the format of a story. This novel made me seriously contemplate many questions that I used to think about, but that I never reached a satisfying end to. These questions include: What are the effects on a culture of a written versus oral storytelling tradition? To what degree is a culture still the same culture when it becomes mixed with other cultures?…
From our interpretation of the fictional short story "One Good Story, That One" by Thomas King, it suggests parody of the religious account of The Garden of Eden (i.e. Adam and Eve). We, as a group, came to the consensus that King seemingly writes from the perspective of a stereotypical Indigenous person who is recounting the story to the best of his ability. Looking at this piece of literature from an educational perspective, it offers an opportunity for students to critically examine the intention behind what is being presented throughout the story. As a group, we decided that this story would be most effective for students to examine in secondary grades. With elementary grade level students, they may have not yet received enough education to have creditable knowledge to draw from when examining this rhetorical piece of literate and, as such, might interpret this differently than King has intended.…
On August 26, 2005, I gave my life to Christ, and it was the start of a whole new chapter of my journey. I still remember that night vividly in my head.
