This essay concludes this assignment and this semesters mathematics module, when first starting the module I felt that my subject knowledge was adequate taking into account that I am out of practise by 4 years. When attending the seminars I quickly realised that I had to revise certain areas of subject knowledge in order to be able to have better practice, and I now have a greater understanding of effective pedagogy. In this essay however I will be discussing the research I have made on how attitudes surrounding mathematics has an impact on how well children perform in a mathematics lesson. There is much written documentation of the complexity of effectively teaching and deliver a good standard mathematics lesson to children one crucial point rasied after studying this was the importance of having a positive attitude around the subject, and the subject matter. Haylock (2007) suggested that the effectiveness of teaching mathematics with an…

Jessica Statsky, the writer of the essay, “Children Need To Play, Not Compete,” describes how children’s sports have been changing in recent times. She speaks of how the parents and coaches near fanatical criteria being imposed are negatively affecting many of the children involved with the sports. The concerns she feels derive from the potential dangers that children in the age ranges of six to twelve are exposed to in all organized sports activities. The dangers she covers are the physical well-being, mental health and anxiety, drop-out rate, and the stresses created by the adults involved in the sport. Statsky’s first observation is the physical risks that young, growing children are being exposed too in sports programs.…

Within the book, “Doing School” by Denise Pope (Pope, 2001), throughout the students’ years in the education system, all of them learned how to do school, in one form or another. Each student developed their own tricks and trades to deal with issues they were personally facing and to help deal with issues that developed because of their school’s curriculum. As Egan (2001) stated “We all recognize the difference between genuine knowledge and accumulated codes – we talk of education as against training, wisdom as against “book learning”… But our schools are not good either at recognizing the difference or, consequently, promoting the genuine article rather than the counterfeit” (p 930).…

Thinking in Numbers: On Life, Love, Meaning and Math is a book written by Daniel Tammet. Throughout the book Tammet allows us to share his unique insights and delight in the way of numbers, fractions, and equations underpin all our lives. In a way, he portrays the message that nobody is born to hate math, but that it’s about our experience with integers, fractions, and numbers that enhances the ability of one another to dislike math. Thinking in Numbers, a series of essays that discuss this relationship stated above, using different life examples such as Algebra, The Islamic Calendar and the endless possibility for Pi. Inspired variously by the complexity of snowflakes, and his wonderful eight siblings, Tammet uses some of these topics to explore questions such as why time seems to speed up as we age, whether there is such a thing as an average person and how we can make sense of those we love.…

Mathematics is perhaps the one subject in schools that deems itself as the hardest where even the best students feels harsh. That is why the new, reading-heavy mathematics in the SAT has thousands of students worried because it makes the hard math even harder (clipping 5). Besides, teaching mathematics could be a hot potato in some areas. As clipping 8 shown, students’ academic underachievement in math has made Stoke offered to pay off the tuition fees of mathematics teachers who come to work in the city. Also, from the perspective of finding jobs, a senior professor Andrew Hacker who taught political science even made an assertion that maths is not an essential skill for most of people because the quantity of people who use either in their…

It can be described as a wave of terror washing over their bodies. Another sign of math anxiety is paranoia this is when students assume that they are the only persons that cannot accomplish a math problem successfully. Next is passive behavior; the students believe they will never comprehend or be comfortable with math, so they decide they won’t do anything about this issue. The last sign that children show when they are being affected by math anxiety is a lack of confidence. The students expect the feeling of powerlessness and assume they will never know the answer to the math problem.…
