Stigmatization of the poor in Capitalist Societies
Something that most people cannot deny is that the state of the economy affects society. The economy affects other social institutions such as education, health, ethical and the organization of our society. Very recently, there has been a shift in the values of the United States as a country starting from the campaign for the 2018 election to our current presidency. We see this clear tie in economy, ethics and the organization of society. Weber writes that the protestant religion push people to look for signs that they have been save. These signs include wealth on earth. This pushes people to work hard and accumulate wealth. Although we live in a society that is secular, we often see signs of this ideology. If people that are saved are wealthy, then poor people are often seen as sinners and thus bad people. During the first 100 days of his presidency, President Trump, has already attempted to repeal the Affordable Health care Act and has proposed another bill that economists say make healthcare three times more expensive than the with the Affordable Health Care Act. In addition, in his budget proposal, he has also slashed the Department of Education budget, meaning that programs such as federal financial aid for low income students will most likely be affected. Other than that, President Trump has made it clear, since his campaign that his office will defund Planned Parenthood. Planned Parenthood, as an organization, mostly serves low income women. Therefore, defunding Planned Parenthood is taking away funds for the reproductive health of poor women. One may wonder about the causes of these negative views on the poor. Another aspect of Weber`s theory is that culture carriers who have greater influences on society are affected by religion in those way, leading to the spread of these ideas, even to people who are not protestant.
