Anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS), primarily referred to as anabolic steroids, are synthetic variants of the male sex hormone testosterone that are either taken orally or injected into the muscles, or applied to the skin as a cream or gel. Anabolic steroids induce the protein synthesis in cellular tissues.
