“Love is not just a verb”-Kendrick Lamar. This verse in the song “Poetic Justice” was his way to say what love is and what is not. Love could be confused for lust. Lust for the appearance attraction. The classic idea of the ‘Triangular love theory’ developed by Robert Sternberg. Where he suggest that there are three elements of love: intimacy, passion, and commitment. Along these lines there are different combinations of the elements. A great example of Stemberg’s theory would be the famous relationship of Romeo and Juliet. This story is a great example of the types of love. Were Romeo and Juliet driven by true love or lust? To start, we would have to figure out which type of love. Some say to love someone you must have passion and commitment, Sternberg triangular love theory states for consummate love you must have three components: intimacy, passion, and commitment.
Firstly, Romeo was just another confused teen; he doesn’t know what love is, but he craved love. Romeo was not in love with Juliet or Rosaline, but in love with the idea of ‘love’. He goes off of impressions and does not know Juliet's true self cause of the limited amount of time they have actually seen each other. In the begin of the story, Romeo is demonstrated with an internal conflict, desperately in love with Rosaline, but the minute he sees Juliet at the

I was the car with my family and our car was crushed like an accordion. While at the hospital I sent a text and let her know what had happened. I didn’t get reply back for like an hour and a half. Which was alright, but she sent a simple ‘oh’. That really made me upset. After being cleared to leave the hospital. I had a long talk with a close friend and asked her for help in regards of my relationship. Her advice to me was to step away and let her be. So I took the advice and broke up with her. I knew this wasn’t going to sit right for me, but inside I wanted her to be

Love and lust. These two things travel closely together and even sometimes overlap. Confusing these two is a common misconception that happens with even the most popular of works. An example of one of these works is Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. It was originally published in 1597 and is arguably Shakespeare’s most known plays.…

This theory was developed by a noted psychologist Robert J. Sternberg. His theory, triangular theory of love, is suggested that there are 3 components: intimacy, passion, and commitment. Intimacy is based on the feelings of closeness, connectedness, and bondedness experienced in loving relationships. It can be a deep understanding with a partner like sharing secrets to one another. Passion refers to the feeling that leads to romance, physical attraction, and sexual consummation.…

In the play, Romeo and Juliet are coming of age so they often jump to conclusion when it comes to the bigger decisions they have to make. A piece of evidence that supports this is Romeo’s instant liking for Rosaline. It’s pure impulsion. He doesn’t take time to talk to her and instead just falls for her. Another piece of evidence is when Tybalt enferiorates Romeo.…

Juliet doesn't want to marry Paris, which led her to want to marry Romeo so soon. Because of her unwillingness to marry Paris, she quickly “falls in love” with Romeo. Their impulsive decisions affect the ending of their “love” story. Romeo only knows Juliet's beauty, “Did my heart love till now? Forswear it, sight, For I ne’er saw true beauty till this night” yet he said that Rosaline was, “O, she is rich in beauty, only poor that, when she dies, with beauty dies her store”.…

Robert Sternberg, American Professor of Human Development at Cornell University, created a theory that can understand the survivability of Romeo and Juliet’s relationship. The theory was called the Triangular theory of love which has three main components in an interpersonal relationship: passion, intimacy, and commitment. Before he created his theory of love, Robert is an expert researcher on love and spent an abundance of his career researching on the topic of love. His motive on creating the theory of love was that he acknowledged these three main components in many interpersonal relationships and he believed that it would be easier to predict the relationship if it is going to last long or not. A study in 1992 by Michele Acker and Mark…

Love is a magical, mysterious, and mesmerizing feeling. It can be felt all around the world in between many different people, even multiple people, but when multiple people become involved, a lot of contradicting reactions can result. In Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream, we can see how multiple love triangles bring drama, humor, and terror to the play. All three reactions create clumps of crazy chaos to the script and lure the reader in. We first see the love triangles appear when Hermia’s father, Egeus, promises to marry her to Demetrius even though she is mutually in love with Lysander.…

As mentioned before, Romeo says he was in love with Rosaline but how could one have been truly been in love with her one minute and in love with Juliet the next. As Romeo lays eyes on Juliet for the first time he states “ Oh, she doth teach the torches to burn bright! It seems she hangs upon the cheek of night Like a rich jewel in an Ethiope’s ear, Beauty too rich for use, for earth too dear. So shows a snowy dove trooping with crows As yonder lady o'er her fellows shows. The measure done, I’ll watch her place of stand, And, touching hers, make blessèd my rude hand.…

Love can begin with puppy-love, and puppy-love is synonymous with infatuation. While they are very different things, the play does not make a distinction between the two. People ache for both experiences, and as we can tell from the outcome of Romeo and Juliet, can make people do extreme things. Eternal true love is idolized, and infatuation is something short-lived and crazily passionate. We must understand the difference in order to get what we really want.…

Romeo and Juliet don’t fully grasp the true meaning and feelings of love. They only seem to relish in their misconception of love, perceiving the tangible desires as “deep” understandings of what they are feeling. Lord Capulet, the nurse, and Lady Capulet all express great amounts of unconditional love for their beloved Juliet. Romeo’s friendships have such strong bonds they could almost classify as family. As a matter of fact, another theory that was very important is Sternberg’s triangular theory of love. This is about how companionate love consists of two types of love, which is intimacy and commitment. Sternberg’s states how there are three elements of love which are passion (sexual as well as physical attraction to someone), intimacy (having a close, warm, and caring relationship), while the last one is commitment (intent and ability to maintain the relationship over an extended period of time). In fact in 1997 Willi did a study on romantic love and what it means to individuals and it stated that romantic love is not only about simplistic feeling but something that for a longer period of time leads to an intensive, erotic attraction and inner fulfillment through the idealization of the relationship with the partner. This is very important because in the movie beauty and the beast we see how this romantic love is built from hate to love.…
