Quality education remains the top priority of residents and administrators of Wilton, and class sizes tend to be smaller than seen in many school districts, ranging from 19 to 21 students in each class. For those who wish to send their child to a private or parochial school, neighboring towns offer many options, including Landmark Academy, St. Luke's and Fairfield Prep. To ensure children are prepared for the future, many educational programs, such as foreign language programs, often begin in elementary or middle school, and more than 89 percent of graduates continue on to a four-year…

The book, Inequality in the Promised Land: Race, Resources, and Suburban Schooling by R. L’Heureux Lewis-McCoy uses an ethnography to examine everyday interactions between parents, students, teachers and school administration in order to understand why resources seldom trickle down to a district’s racial and economic minorities (2). Lewis-McCoy observed fourth-grade classrooms in two public elementary schools within the Rolling Acres Public Schools (RAPS) – River Elementary and Cherry Elementary. The study used in-depth interviews with parents, children, teachers, community members, and school administrators (14). In this paper, I will focus on three major concepts: concerted cultivation, parental engagement and the colorblind ideology.…

Before coming to the event my initial thought was, the author just expanding on his thought behind the book, but once I was there and listening. I found that it was much more than just a story of two people, it is a story of how your decisions in life help mold your future. College is not just about your degree but about the things you intend to do with it after college, about the live you plan on changing. No matter your position in life, or your social class, you can become much more than people expect of you.…

This reflection will be in response to the field experience that was completed on the 12th of November, 2015 by Matthew Daykin. For my High School field experience, I attended Palmetto Ridge High School and observed both Mrs. Zacher’s ninth grade English class and Mrs. Reid’s ninth grade Science and Math classes. Palmetto Ridge High School (A.K.A. “The Ridge”) is a grade 9-12 school located in Naples, Florida. The Ridge has a total of 1,865 students; 46.33% of the students are listed as identifying as White, 7.29% are listed as identifying as Black, 40.8% of the students identify as Hispanic, 1.39% of the students identify as Asian, 2.63% identify as Indian, 1.29% identify as Multi-Racial, while only 0.27% identify as Hawaiian or Pacific Islander (“Palmetto Ridge High (PRH) School”, 2015). When I was listening to the audio “The problem We all Live With” brought be many questions as an American. Growing up we were forced to believe in this ideology that we are all created equal and we are free, but the question is are we? Since, I can remember we have always pledged to the flag of the United States every morning before class started. Just by simply breaking down the words on the pledge of allegiances we can analyze the meaning of those words. The pledge allegiances states that “ I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible with liberty and justice for all”.…

It is evident that America is a melting pot and always has been a country with diverse groups of people. Due to the increasing racial and ethnic diversity, people are labeled and grouped into categories mainly for convenience and familiarity (Healey & O’Brien, 2015). Over the course of this semester, I have learned numerous terms, concepts, and theories concerning minority groups in the United States. Of those things, the most intriguing and eye opening information that struck a chord inside of me concerned the stereotypes that affect minority groups, in addition to the prejudice and discrimination these group members face. Before this course, I had heard many stereotypes, joked about and ran from them, but it never occurred to me how detrimental…

Within the United States, there are many groups in which people separate themselves. More specifically, at my high school, there is also a lot of division and with that, prejudices and conflicts. When the slew of murders against unarmed African Americans occurred at the hands of the police, many students of color felt enraged and extremely sadden at this tragedy happening yet again. Some students expressed this frustration at school by having “black out day” or sitting during the pledge. Protesting in our own way, it had the effect of upsetting certain Caucasian students, causing them to throw offensive racial slurs against the minority population in school.…

While analyzing the required text for this week there were five ethical categories that reoccurred through each document: responsibilities to parents, collaboration, community, personal development, and students. In addition, there are other categories, but these are the most significant to me. Special education teachers have a responsibility to parents: • Use culturally appropriate communication with parents and families that is respectful and accurately understood (CEC, 2010). • Actively seek and use the knowledge of parents and individuals with exceptionalities when planning, conduction, and evaluating special education services and empower them as partners in the education process (CEC, 2010). • Respect the private nature of the special…

The definition of stereotype is a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing. The advantage of stereotype is it helps us organize the world and help simplified it but the disadvantage is people are unwilling to look past the stereotype and are will not rethink one’s idea. For example of stereotyping at Michigan State is people in Greek life do not care about school and are only there to party. The issue with stereotype is when people see people fitting with the stereotype they have it just confirms the idea; it does not make them think that there are exceptions. Stereotypes in advertising increase the idea or behavior.…
