The report I chose was retrieved from ABC News and written by reporter Dennis Romero, addressing the heartbreaking shooting of an unarmed African American male name Stephon Clark who lived in Sacramento, California. This tragedy initiated a large protest by the Black Lives Matter movement in the Sacramento area. It affected the local community and an event in the community all day on a Thursday, March 22, 2018. The local community the protestors affected were five expressed highways. Protestors of the community held signs, wanting justice for Stephon Clark. Stephon Clark was a twenty-three-year-old father of two. Currently, the protest of this senseless shooting is ongoing because of other African American males that have been shot and killed by police officers in the past for meaningless reasons. The civil disobedience action was the community protesting a mass demonstration about two Sacramento police officer killing an unarmed father of two, while not listening to city law enforcement on the five freeways and in front of the Golden One Center. The violation of the protestors of not listening to law enforcement was to address justice issues and societal change of future shooting of unarmed African American males. I believe deviance is needed at times to get a point across, thus taking a step to push for change in a good way. The second sociological concept I will use to analyze the protest is collective conscience. Collective conscience is a view of the society from the functionalist perspective. This concept was also introduced by Emile Durkheim. It is defined as a group of people of a society who shares religious beliefs, ethics, and attitudes (Keirns, et al., 2016).
