Stepfamilies: The New Normalization Of Divorce

Improved Essays
It’s sad to think that society has grown to normalize divorce in families. It’s not uncommon to either know someone who is a victim to it or to be a part of it firsthand. The pain and heartbreak it brings is not something that anyone should have to go through, especially kids. Having to watch your parents go from loving each other immensely to feeling nothing for each other is confusing for any kid to watch. I know there is no instruction manual on how marriage is supposed to go or how to raise kids but back in the day people stayed together despite their differences. I think that everyone deserves to be happy but marriage is a commitment and should not be given up on as easy as it seems like some people do.
Stepfamilies have also become a new normal in society. I’ve seen first hand the good and the bad that those relationships have had on kids. It’s unfair of your parents to put you into these new lives

In this case it led my mother to a much deserved, happy marriage.
When I was in second grade my mom met the love of her life and that was the start of my family. All those preconceived notions about stepfamilies were not at all relevant in my new family. At first it was a bit of an adjustment but it eventually grew into a love filled family. I now had a dad. This was definitely the hardest thing to get adjusted to. For eight years I was my mom’s best friend and was the center of most of her attention. But it didn’t take long at all for me to accept the fact that I now had to share those things with someone else because he truly is the best dad I could ever

In the past centuries, reality TV shows has become one of the most common forms of entertainment in the many households. “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo” is a popular reality TV show aired by TLC, featuring a “Toddlers and Tiaras” star Alana Thompson, who is well known as the ‘Honey Boo Boo Child’ by many, and her “redneck” family as they screen their daily life in rural Georgian. The show was thought to be one of the most controversial reality TV shows of all time and although the TV show series quickly became a well-discussed topic for the internet and has produced a great number of audience for TLC, critics argued that the TV show series itself is a form of child abuse and with some characterizing the show as "offensive," "outrageous," and "exploitative”.…

Some families are better with divorces because the children can be happy without screaming parents everyday hopefully. There are so families that the grandparents are the caretakers, According to The Return of the Multi-Generational Family Household, “Many children also grow up in what is called a “multigenerational” household. This refers to a home that is headed by a grandparent rather than a parent. About 1 in 20 children in the United States grow up in such a household. ”(The)…

Although marriage has long been associated with love and romance, an unhealthy marriage can pose serious complications on a family. With 49 percent of all marriages in the United States ending in divorce, divorced persons often consider remarriage, believing that the next partner they select is truly “the one” (Cox & Demmitt, p. 450, 2014). Although one would think that a person with previous marital experience would be more knowledgeable in what they are seeking in a new spouse (Cox & Demmitt, p. 485, 2014), love and marriage continue to deceive many people (Marano, para. 10-11, 2000). Furthermore, persons seeking remarriage following a divorce are left in a vulnerable state that cause them to make irrational decisions (Marano, para.…

Divorce: the termination of a marital union, and cancelling the legal duties of a marriage. The assertion that caught my attention while reading the book, Against Love, by Laura Kipnis, was in chapter three, The Art of Love, on page 140 when she says, “To those who want to maintain that non-divorced families turn out less neurotic or happier adults, the evidence supporting such views is a little scanty: please look around”. I agree with Kipnis that non-divorced families aren’t always happy because the indication backing that up is lacking. I can relate to Kipnis’ opinions about divorce because I am one of those who have divorced parents. Growing up, I was always so happy and thought I had the greatest and most lovable family of them all.…

Some relationships just do not work out as hoped so divorce is a good option, especially when kids are involved in a family that is falling apart. These people may care about each other, or not, but they will most likely be happier and in a better place to care for their children apart rather than together. In addition, now that people are paying less attention to being an economic unit they can focus more on family and understanding each other. These changes from the traditional American family are not making it deteriorate, but are instead changing it to make it stronger than it has ever…

Children of divorced families often have fear or anxiety about their own future relationships and marriage, I know that I do. The more a child experiences divorce the more likely it is that they will be unsure about their own relationships in the future. We are all influenced by what we see and experience and divorce is one of the harder things to go through. I think that we need to have more help for children of divorced parents, something that is mandatory so that the parents cannot just decide the child is handling the situation and not bring them. Group sessions with other children of divorced families would be best as sometimes children will blame themselves or think they are alone when they are not.…

Bronfenbrenner’s ecological theory of development centered around the theory that a person is affected by the distinct relationships they have during their life. These relationships can be put into five different levels and each level represents each of the major interactions. The levels are the microsystem, mesosystem, exosystem, microsystem, and the chronosystem. Each level is based on the theory that each change based on the environmental systems that the person is exposed to from childhood through adulthood. This paper will show how Bronfenbrenner’s ecological theory shaped the author’s development through their life.…

It might be that step mothering is just more difficult, because the children's bond with the biological mother is very powerful. For the most part, a man can be a good stepfather simply by being a provider and a "nice" guy, but a stepmother is usually called upon to establish empathy and attachment, traits that are very difficult to establish, and impossible to fabricate. Other research shows that stepchildren are less likely to be provided for. Studies confirm that biological mothers around the world spend more family income on food-particularly milk, fruit, and vegetables-and less on tobacco and alcohol, compared with mothers raising non-biological children (63). Whatever the reasons, stepmothers and stepchildren are the losers in these reconfigured families.…
