There are many laws in place to prevent young adolescents from engaging in relations with someone much older. A law that is growing more popular would be the “Romeo and Juliet Law.” This law has been put in place to prevent one under the age of 21 from being labeled as a sex offender for engaging in sexual activity with one who is no more than 4 years younger than themselves. The law does not keep one from being prosecuted; however, it does guarantee lesser sentences and prevents one from being named a sex offender in the eyes of society. Women often match well with older men due to the reason many women mature faster than men. If one enters a relationship with someone older, but on the same maturity level as them, the two are more likely to be compatible. Rape shield laws limit the use of evidence of a victim’s past sexual history that might undermine the victim’s credibility. The purpose of rape shield laws is to protect victims from emotional distress when cross-examined about their sexual history (Brody & Acker, 2010). Courts feel the victim’s sexual history has little relevance and the humiliation and fear of being questioned about their past sexual conduct might prevent some victims to come forward (Brody & Acker, 2010).. In Tennessee, Rape shield laws were adapted in response to a sexist view that a woman who had sexual relations in the past was more likely to have consensual sex with a specific criminal defendant (Brody & Acker, 2010).…

Canadian rape laws have been extremely problematic in the past; they reflected the fact that the criminal justice system was more concerned with the victim’s credibility than with the perpetrator’s innocence or guilt. One’s husband or wife could not be accused of rape, as they were protected under spousal immunity. The victim’s sexual history was often examined and used to, in essence, blame them for the crimes committed against them and strip them of their dignity in court. Bill C-127 was passed in 1983, with the objective of redefining rape and indecent assault as violent crimes and changing public perceptions of what defines sexual violence.…

Statutory rape is often not heard about as much as rape because, it is a form of rape that isn’t as big, and sometimes it isn’t taken seriously especially the way the media portrays it. Statutory rape refers to sexual relations involving someone below the “age of consent.” People below the age of consent cannot legally consent to having sex. This means that sex with them, by definition, violates the law. If a 25 year old man were to have any type of sexual relations with a 15 year old that would be statutory rape.…
