Architecture Personal Statement Essay

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
After five years of education in architecture, I see the world around me through a designer’s perspective. When I try to approach the construction industry from a different and a more holistic approach, I find my training somewhat lacking. I feel very strongly about learning more about the construction industry, how it works, and how buildings are managed and maintained. To do so, my Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, though ample for a comprehension of certain parts of the industry, seems limited if you consider that architecture and design comprise a stage in the entire course of action.
Construction, for me, is more than just the erection of a structure; it is an entire process. As a student of architecture, I was greatly

This will allow me to ensure that construction takes place with utmost care to all aspects of the structure. It will also aid me in being an effective liaison between different people contributing to the completion of the structure. In my experiences as an architect, both during my student and professional life, what I have understood is that on many occasions, what is designed in the architects’ office is not translated appropriately into the finished product. Many architects are obligated to handle only the design, and not the execution of a project. As a result, there are many discrepancies in the original idea and the final output. I feel this can be overcome when the project is handled by professionals with a well-rounded knowledge of the entire field of …show more content…
Owing to the fact that I have chosen to work, now and previously, in small scale firms, I have developed a broader understanding when it comes to applied work. I have been delegated diverse responsibilities, beyond just a designer’s. During my work experience, I have been privileged to see projects in various stages, and directly handle different factors which lead to the completion of a project. These include initial planning and designing; adherence to the by-laws of the particular region; structural outsourcing and management; overseeing of construction of the projects I’m in charge of with regular site visits and communication with contractors and builders; and learning from construction developers what it takes to manage and deal with real estate. This overall perspective of projects is what drives me to further my education in this specific direction of construction

This week I read The Spirit Garden by Ryan Gorrie. This article was about a bent wood structure he created for the Anishnaabe people through a combination of new and old building techniques. This reading was less about the structure he created and more about the people. Gorrie felt that it was his responsibility to make these people’s vision a reality. He talks about how architecture is actually an animate object.…

It is the architect’s responsibility to design his or her building to have a significant impact on the occupants’ spatial experience. This experience goes far beyond the physical and tangible components of the design, it is metaphysical, observed, perceived. It is for example, like our favorite song, it goes much deeper than just lyrics and melodies it creates a connection between us and the feeling, experience, or memory we link that song to when we hear it. “When an architect thinks about space, he or she is thinking about a relationship, not an objective phenomenon - human space, not scientific space.” The United States Bankruptcy Courthouse is a historical building located in the Park Avenue Historic District in Tallahassee, Florida.…

If there is anything to write on the subject of Architecture 101, I could not help but wonder is there anything more primordial, more primeval, intuitive or simply more basic than to write about Space and Form? Architecture students (or for that, matter professionals), generally marvel at Form simply because of its direct visual and tactile nature experienced through their (and our own) baser sensory perception. But Space is not as tangible; and this is where both fumble. It is only natural; otherwise Lao Tzu the philosopher would not have to explain the dialectic ever so elaborately at great lengths.…
