Statement Of Purpose: A Career In Occupational Therapy

My mother has been a key component in furthering my knowledge and experiences in my life so far, and will continue to be well on into my future. When talking with my mom about different career choices she recommended that I talk to one of her friends that was an occupational therapist at the elementary school she works at. Laura has been an occupational therapist for over fifteen years and received a bachelors of science in occupational therapy she has worked in an array of environments including various hospitals and schools. Although while in school she did not have a major decided but knew she really wanted to help people. Laura explained that being an occupational therapist provides an extensive list of opportunities in which you can be creative in your everyday work, from coming up with creative solutions to problems, to switching up methods to fit an individual patients needs. Laura loves how interesting her work can be, no two patients are alike and the methods and techniques needed will vary. Personally, the creative aspect of a career is very important to me, to have the ability to create individual relationships and expand my knowledge is a wonderful possibility. As far as opportunities in advancement, Laura explained that the areas in which you can grow in occupational therapy is limitless. You can become a general practitioner, specialize in a subject, become a supervisor or manager, and even create your own practice. All the opportunities for becoming an occupational therapist is very exciting, to have this amount of freedom when looking for a career someday is by far one of the most important aspects a future career can have. Another promising piece of information received is the personal love Laura has for being an occupational therapist. Laura really likes the individual relationships you build with your patients and having the space to meet new people, helping people and seeing their success drives her inreturn to be successful. Overall, almost every aspect of being an occupational therapist fits very well with the internal drive and expectations I have for a future
