Since national certification through a Board-recognized certifying body is a condition for APRN licensure, it may be required inquire to verify that the chosen advanced practice nursing program of interest meets accreditation standards. The Ohio Board of Nursing maintains education requirements in line with the national APRN Consensus Model. Advanced practice nursing programs must include the following core courses: advanced pathophysiology, advanced health assessment, and advanced pharmacology in order to remain in compliance with the consensus model. NP’s in Ohio must practice under a Standard Care Arrangement (SCA) with a physician. This agreement is a written contract between a nurse practitioner and collaborating physician. The Standard Care Arrangement outlines which services the NP offers as well as how often the nurse practitioner's performance will be reviewed including chart review. The agreement must also include prescribing parameters and a statement regarding health care of infants up to one year of age and recommendations for provider visits through three years of age. The Standard Care Arrangement is to be signed by both the NP and MD and kept at all practice locations. The agreement must be reviewed and signed each year. A physician does not need to practice on site with the nurse practitioner. The nurse practitioner's performance must only be reviewed on an annual basis. A semi-annual review of the nurse practitioner's prescribing practices is required. This externship consists of the SCA between the NP that has a valid CTPE and one or more licensed physicians. During this time which is a minimum of 1500 hours, the NP’s prescriptive activities are reviewed and guided to help them gain expertise, improve skills, and grow knowledgably. To obtain the CPTE the NP must complete forty five hours in advanced pharmacology, have a valid RN license, documentation of a graduate degree with national certification, a valid SCA, application, and fees. Of the 1500 hours of supervision needed, 500 of those hours must be in direct contact with physician (Keels and Pratt, n. d.). The certificate to prescribe is issued once all the hours are completed and it is valid for two years. Twelve hours, with six hours specifically focused on scheduled two medications, of pharmacology continuing education must be completed in order to retain licensure. These records must be kept for six years in case of an audit. The CTP and CTPE number must be written on all prescriptions (American association of nurse practitioners, n.
