My junior year in high school, I became a student mentor in our campus’s peer counseling program. This was an incredibly rewarding experience as I had the opportunity to help freshman students assimilate into our high school dynamic. As a peer mentor, I assisted students with personal problems and mediated issues with teachers in order to maximize their learning experience. I also acted as a role model for my mentees by talking frequently about AP and Honors courses and how to be successful in such programs. I put effort into learning about each individual's interests and goals so that I could expose them to clubs and academic courses that they may appreciate such as the Biomedical Academy or our school’s robotics team.…

“Life Coaching: A Cognitive Behavioural Approach” Summary Michael Neenan and Windy Dryden, the authors of “Life Coaching: A cognitive behavioural approach, second edition” (2014) offer a pragmatic, evidence-based method of coaching based on the concept of cognitive behavioral therapy. The authors discuss the sequence of emotional causation and how—in fact—one’s thoughts affect one’s emotion and thus, one’s behavior. Neenan and Dryden (2014) report that most coaching clients have an external attribution style regarding their emotions (i.e. - they embrace the misconception that other people or events are responsible for how they feel). To substantiate this, the authors give reference to Dr. Albert Ellis’ ABC model that explains how emotional upset—in relation to negative events—is shaped by the thoughts or beliefs concerning the event, which has a greater impact than the event itself.…
I have reflected on my CPD through an analysis of metaphorical ways of making sense of my learning from K802 and E807. A metaphor is about capturing the essential nature of an experience. And an active process which is at the very heart of understanding oneself, others and practice. Applying metaphors can help express beliefs and understandings that are often tacit, implicit, and hidden from view. By openly expressing our beliefs and understandings, practitioners can start to analyse them.…
I am a Student Paramedic with the East Of England Ambulance NHS Trust and this essay will look reflectively at an incident I attended during the course of my duties. The assignment will reflect on the moral, ethical and legal aspects of pre-hospital care that challenged me during this particular emergency. Reflective practice is a requirement of the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC, 2014). Rolfe, Freshwater and Jasper (2001) state, “we learn by doing and realising what came of what we did”.…
The appropriate course of action to resolve this potential issue would be open communication and awareness of the roles, boundaries, and power dynamics involved in these relationships and each situation to minimize the potential for harm to the supervisee and supervisory relationship recommended by Pearson and Piazza (1997). Especially, in this case analysis the supervisor could potentially be taking advantage of the supervisee without even knowing, because the supervisee may just agree with the supervisor based solely off of the differences and power and the supervisors position. The last potential ethical dilemma is a direct result of lack of clear boundaries which is being able to effectively avoid issues or problems presented by their dual or multiple relationships. The supervisor in this case was considering sharing a room with their supervisee during a family therapy conference that they both had to attend.…
My approach for students to gain these opportunities is reflected in the model I have established following support tools for student services by challenging students growth and development by challenging their educational and leadership opportunities. Also by guiding students to commit to their own educational experience, develop their own set of morals and beliefs and establish goals for their future career. Lastly, it is important provide students with community to establish their identity as emerging adults, provide a safe living and learning environment, and a supportive community for growth, development, and self-exploration. I believe that my personal philosophy will continue to adjust and develop as I continuously work with students but it is important to be willing to adjust my approach to Student Affairs as both the field and the students are continuously changing and evolving.…
From my interview with Donna Portnoy and what I was taught in the course, I comprehended that each school graduation process is different. One school may allow you to graduate without taking hours on an internship, while other school may make it a requirement. Walden University incorporates a Counseling Practicum and two Counseling Internships in your course completion requirements. I’ve learned that throughout the Profession of Mental Health Counseling in whichever career you pick your counseling techniques will be different in the population of people you serve. In contradiction to what I was taught in the class and the Interview I understand that topics presented to be in this Introduction to Mental Health Counseling course.…
I have always had a great interest in helping and working with others, as far back as I can remember. Having experienced personal problems at a young age made me have a deep perceptive beyond my years. My parents were teens and didn’t feel prepared to raise my siblings and me. As the second oldest I had to grow up fast with having the responsibility of being caretaker for my siblings. My childhood involved me with social workers that help me gain understanding of my brother who is Autistic.…
My Personal Philosophy of the Helping Profession Rachel Devlin Central Community College Human Services Department My Personal Philosophy of the Helping Profession Life is meant to be lived, but life is what your make it. Choices define who we are but not who we could be. It can be hard, with struggles internally and externally. It can be painful. Things happen in life that hurt, some is due to circumstances beyond our control while others happen due to the choices we make.…
I have always had an interest in clinical supervision. As a student at the University of Malta reading for a degree in physiotherapy, my dissertation evaluated the role of the clinical supervisor during placements for physiotherapy students. Looking back on my placement experience from a student point of view, while I have had good and dedicated role models, I have also experienced unenthusiastic supervisors, who lacked appropriate teaching and communication skills. A lack of preparation for the supervisor’s role impedes clinical education (Laitinen-Vaananen, Talvitie, & Lukka, 2007). Plack (2008) adds that a negative attitude and poor behaviour of the clinical educator is also a barrier to learning on clinical placement.…
It would be folly to state that reflection is useful only for academic and training purposes. Reflection is a process in which the majority, if not all, people use on a day to day basis. Whether it is on the way home from work after a hard day, or perhaps after a conversation with a family member; it would be a rare individual indeed who could state that they do not go over previous experiences in their mind. It is, in essence, the active evaluation of our day-to-day lives.…
