The birth of organized crime and gang violence was, arguably, the 1920's. Business were scared into getting "protection" by gangs. While gruesome crimes were committed from avenging mobsters. The most unforgettable crime was the St. Valentine's Da y Massacre. Bugs Morans legacy is defined best through his participation in the St. Valentine's Day Massacre. In Minnesota on 1891, Alelard Cunin was born. He didnt get along with his father very well. At the age of 19, Alelard Cunin ran away were he switched his name to george Moran. Eventually Moran became active in gangs, which led to his first arrest in 1921 at the age of 21. He later spent several other times in jail for crimes of larceny and burglary (Taylor). Bootlegging is the illegal business of trafficking alcoholic beverages. The North Side gang became a powerful institution in providing liqour to wealthy citizens. Moran was excellent at hijacking liqour trucks and O Banion knew it. Moran became O Banions right hand man. Many people turned to bootlegging for more money. For example, The Great Gatsbys character Gatsby had a business in bootlegging as well. It was revealed when Tom researched Gatsby. " He and this Wolfsheim bought up a lot of side street drug stores here in Chicago and sold grain alcohol over the counters [...] I picked him as a bootlegger the first time I saw himand I wasnt wrong."
