St. Thomas More was born to Agnes and John More. He had five siblings, three sisters and two brothers. So he joined parliament in 1504. While working as a member of parliament, Thomas married Jane Colt. Together they had four children: Margaret, Elizabeth, Cicely, and John More. Sadly, Jane died after being married to Thomas for six years. Then Thomas married Alice Middleton, and they had one child. It was during this time that Thomas wrote the book Utopia . Utopia was a place made up by him about Heaven.

Everything there was made to perfection and nothing went wrong. Utopia also covered topics like divorce, multi-religious societies, women’s rights, and state-controlled education.
Utopia , however, was far from what Thomas More experienced while working under King Henry VIII. Thomas More became King Henry’s servant and friend. In 1527, King Henry tried to use the Bible to prove to More that Henry’s marriage to Catherine of Aragon, who had failed to produce a male child, was not valid. Thomas could not agree with King Henry’s reasoning for divorce. In 1532, More resigned from parliament because he said his health was poor. The real reason was because he did not approve of King Henry’s divorce. St. Thomas More went to jail for two years because Henry found out why Thomas actually left.
