St. Theodore The Studite Summary

To many modern Christians the question of icon admiration may seem like an unimportant matter. St. Theodore the Studite was instrumental in the defense of icons writing in the midst of the iconoclastic debate of the eighth and ninth centuries, it was clear that iconoclasm was a serious error, which alienates its followers from God. Rejection of Christian respect of images effectively denies God's spirit, which alone makes human salvation possible. If Christ could not be portrayed, then He was not truly a man, and humanity was not truly united with God in Him. In our own day, when the material world so often is regarded as a simple matter, incapable of being transformed in Christ, St Theodore's message remains remarkably pertinent. His work

Christ figures are displayed throughout literary works all the time and they help create a deeper and symbolic meaning to the story. An example of a Christ figure is in the movie Seven Pounds, where the character Ben Thomas devotes his life to helping others with illnesses. Some similarities that I found Ben shared with Christ include: 1)Ben Thomas is in agony because he regrets causing the accident that killed innocent people. 2)Ben is self-sacrificing because he helps the terminally ill and other people who actually deserve help. He donates bone marrow to a small boy and donates one of his kidneys to and older woman.…

St. Boniface continued by discussing the issues with Nyasalanders and stores. He said, “In Nyasaland there are stores run by Indians, Europeans, and also Africans. Often we natives are allowed to purchase from the Indian and native stores; the European stores are not open to natives. This shows that the Europeans have no sympathy and are very rude as in these stores they chase a native out as though he were a dog. […] As I see it there is no reason why the natives should be prevented from entering therein.”…

Christianity and Judaism was a big deal in Roman and Greek culture during the period of the New Testament. Religion seemed to be the center of many conflicts and separation between civilizations during this time. The birth of Jesus brought in a lot of controversies within Hellenistic cultures and therefore we see many influences of the new covenant in several of the sculptures and art work created by Greco-Roman artists. Going to the Getty Villa, I was able to find many connections between the collection of Greco-Roman antiquities—including the sculptures and even the general atmosphere of the museum—and the historicity of the New Testament. Driving into the Getty Villa It is hard not to note the stone pavement which makes for a bumpy ride.…

Another example of art being used as a better form of communication for mystics would be Joachim of Fiore translating his complex Trinitarian theology of history into a series of elaborate diagrams(called figurae), which “present the relation between the Trinity and humanity’s growing mastery of contemplation” (McGinn, 133). Henry Suso, a fourteenth century friar and writer, was also interested in the concept of “using images to cast out images in the path to union with God”, and commissioned multiple pieces for his mystical treatises, the Exemplar (133). In the final chapter, he illustrates an artwork showing how “the soul comes forth from the hidden divine abyss through the action of the Trinity and finally flows back again through the three persons into the darkness of God” (133). Icons helped mystics record important events or spiritual moments in their life.…
