More than 1.2 million people are at or below the poverty area in Arizona and don’t know where there next meal will come from, Arizona has the highest rate of hunger with 17.8% more than the national average of 15.9%. Mary is a non-profit organization and is funded through donation and partnership with stores such as fry’s, Safeway, and goodwill to gather donation. They mainly depend on volunteers from the community to come and help with passing food, cooking around the holidays such as Thanksgiving and Christmas.
St. Mary’s serves two-thirds of Arizona’s counties, the Food Bank distributed enough food to provide 70 million meals last year to families and individuals (St. Mary Food Banks).
The role of the community health profession is to educate the people of Arizona. Planning a need assessment and finding out the cause for high rate of hunger in Arizona. Arizona has the highest rate of hunger, so as a community health professional it’s our job to plan, organize and educate our community about options that could decrease the statistic of hunger.
