St. Mary food bank is the world first book bank that serves food to less privilege people. St. Mary Food Banks started in 1967 by John van Hengel. St. Mary Food Bank mission is “to alleviate hunger through the gathering and distribution of food while encouraging self-sufficiency, collaboration, advocacy, and education” (St. Mary Food Banks).
More than 1.2 million people are at or below the poverty area in Arizona and don’t know where there next meal will come from, Arizona has the highest rate of hunger with 17.8% more than the national average of 15.9%. The target populations are children’s, struggling families, and seniors on fix incomes (St. Mary Food Banks). In 2014 there were 45 individuals on home delivery waiting lists. Mary is a non-profit organization and is funded through donation and partnership with stores such as fry’s, Safeway, and goodwill to gather donation. They mainly depend on volunteers from the community to come and help with passing food, cooking around the holidays such as Thanksgiving and Christmas.

The role of the community health profession is to educate the people of Arizona. Planning a need assessment and finding out the cause for high rate of hunger in Arizona. Arizona has the highest rate of hunger, so as a community health professional it’s our job to plan, organize and educate our community about options that could decrease the statistic of hunger. St. Mary has a program called community kitchen that gives second chance to student with barrier employee and succeed in the culinary world.
