On Novemeber 14th,1493 christopher Columbus visted st.croix on his second voyage to the new world. Columbus named the island santa cruz (holy cross). Upon anchoring off a natural bay west of Christiansted, known today as salt river. Columbus’s men where met by defensive arrows from the native indian people (Caribs) that inhabited the island that made Columbus men retreat. Although, in 1917 st.croix alongside with st.john and st.thomas was later then purchased by the united states from the Danish government for military reasons (www.vinow.com). The population in the USVI is mainly made up of Caribbean people with african and European decent (www.gotoscroix.com). Although English is the main language in St.croix and throughout the virgin islands but majority of the locals speak very swift and with heavy accents making it very difficult to comprehend. The music is definitely Caribbean. In the virgin islands saying Good morning, Good Afternoon and good night are not the same as saying hello or hi; these are more welcoming greetings and it is the norm for friends and strangers in the virgin islands
