He served as a squad leader at WTU responsible for the health, welfare, morale, safety, training and completion of all medical transitional requirements of 43 exceptional wounded warriors and their families. SSG Upshaw coordinated with Platoon Sergeants, Nurse Case Managers, and Physicians to ensure each warrior received a smooth transition and felt like an integral part of their onward transition to civilian life. This assignment was very fulfilling for SSG Upshaw, as he was one of the last representatives that these men and women would come into contact with before leaving the military and he took pride in assisting each individual. SSG Upshaw also served as the Senior Supply Sergeant for one of the largest Warrior Transition Brigade, consisting of five companies and over 200 Warriors in Transition. SSG Upshaw cross trained effectively outside of his functional MOS managing the Warrior Transition Brigades 13.5 million dollar budget, ensuring the Brigade received the services and contracted support needed to effectively serve its Wounded
