Some refer to the 1970 Chevelle SS as the "ultimate American muscle car". The 1970 Chevelle SS454 is considered to be "the ultimate Chevelle". With its intimidating body style, powerful motor and growling dual exhaust the 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS is every bit pure American muscle.

Two engines were available in Chevelle's1970 super sport package. The SS396 was powered by a 396 cubic inch Turbo-Jet V8 putting out 350 horsepower. The SS454 was a powerhouse with its LS-6 454 cubic inch V8 motor delivering a whopping 450 horsepower. The LS-6 was the most powerful production engine of 1970. It was reported having a quarter mile time of 13.12 seconds with top speed of 108 mph.

The SS396 was fitted with a Rochester Quadrajet 4 bbl carburetor. The Quadrajet had a flow rate of 750 cfm. The SS454 was given a Holley 4 bbl carburetor with a cfm of 800. Due to Federal emissions standards, an Air Injection Reactor pump was installed in the top of the exhaust manifold. This put a

The SS454 transmission options were the Muncie M22 4 speed manual or the automatic M40 TH400 3 speed auto.

The body style of the 1970 Chevelle SS is everything that comes to mind when you think of a muscle car. It's squared-up stance, subtle fender flare, dual domed hood and aggressive styling are what puts the American muscle car in a class of its own . 1970 was also the first year the dual racing stripe was available as an option for the Chevelle SS.

Both the SS396 and SS454 came with blacked out front grilles, with the SS emblem replacing Chevrolet's classic bow tie. SS396 and SS454 emblems were placed on the front fender. Federal mandates made 1970 the first year tail lights were mounted to the rear bumper. Wide-oval white-lettered tires on Magnum 500 steel wheels and bright fender well molding added to the flashy SS
