Define
Loss of the fetus in uterus before 20 weeks of pregnancy (Spontaneous Abortion: Medline Plus)
Cause. Risk Factors.
According to Medline Plus:
Chromosomal problems which stops fetus from fully developing
Drug & alcohol use
Exposure to environmental toxins
Hormone problems
Infections
Obesity
Systemic diseases from mother
Age
Symptoms

Monitor closely up to two weeks
Surgery or medicine to expel fetus may be needed
Long-term Complications

Rare. Infected abortion may occur if fetal matter remains in uterus after miscarriage.

Deficient fluid loss r/t excessive blood loss
Risk for infection
Disabled family coping r/t loss of fetus
Anxiety r/t mother not being able to carry to full-term
Ineffective tissue perfusion r/t excessive bleeding leading to death of fetus
Nursing Interventions
1. Monitor vital signs 2. Note mental status of mother when bleeding 3. Give emotional support and guidance to mother 4. Monitor intake and output 5. Maintain bed rest 6. Encourage fluid intake 7. Refrain from strenuous activity 8. Perform daily weight checks 9. Teach relaxation techniques 10. Advise patient to report any signs of bleeding or severe abdominal pain
