Caregivers are persons who provide unpaid assistance for the physical and emotional needs of another person, ranging from partial assistance to 24 hour care, depending on the severity of the disease, disorder, or condition (Payne, 2009). Individuals who have taken on this role can find themselves so overwhelmed with responsibilities and stress that they themselves develop chronic illnesses (Rabin, 2012c). It is the SLP’s responsibility to utilize trained counseling skills to potentially aid in the reduction of these developments.
