Practice Specific Concepts
A concept is defined as “a symbolic representation of a phenomenon or a set of phenomena” (Peterson & Bredow, 2016, p. 1). “Theories are based on multiple concepts and were developed in an attempt to explain the reasoning behind the way something is perceived to happen” (Peterson & Bredow, 2016, p. 1). Theories ask complicated questions and seek various ways of thinking rather than to just answer a question outright (Butts & Rich, 2015, p. 79). While all nursing theories have common metaparadigm concepts which are patients or human beings, nurse, health, and environment, there are other concepts pertinent to everyday nursing practice (Butts & Rich, 2015, p. 89). Neuman emphasized the importance of preventing stress in order to provide and promote an illness free foundation for the client to build upon (Olowokere & Okanlawon, 2015). As nurses, we are in the patient’s environment and the way we perceive their health-related illnesses affects their stance on healing. Neuman used concepts such as primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention. It entails an algorithm that can be followed repeatedly and allows for an understanding of diseases processes and the reoccurrence within individuals. Primary prevention strengthens the flexible line of defense in order to reduce the possibility of stressors to penetrate and cause illness. For example, providing a calm environment that eliminates risk factors that induce stress when treating a patient would be a primary intervention. Secondary prevention locates the issue and the nurse then attempts to use interventions to treat the disease. This would entail the nurse to treat the patient once the symptoms have occurred. Finally, the tertiary prevention re-educates the patient in an attempt to fortify the flexible line of defense and prevent illness from occurring again. The relationship between a patient and the nurse is based on respect towards one another. There are moments when the writer will be the patient’s advocate no matter the circumstance and provide sensitive care in complex end of life scenarios. The writer uses critical thinking and wisdom to provide care to those actively dying to maintain “dying with dignity”. The nurse must attend to multiple needs of the patient and act in a manner that eliminates ambiguity and promotes comfort. This complex concept requires the use of a high degree of alertness and skill from the nurse and respect to the patient, their situation, and the family involved (Hemetai et al., 2016).
