Carla Tate is mentally challenged young woman who had been sent off to a sheltered boarding school for much of her life. After receiving certification from the boarding school, she is now a determined young woman. Her mother, father, and two sisters greet Carla when she returns home. Carla tells her mother that she wants to become a veterinary tech and that she needs a high school diploma to do so. Her mother, Elizabeth, just brushes it off. Carla has so much drive to be independent from her family that she goes to trade school. While she is there she meets another mentally challenged student; his name is Daniel McMann. Carla sees that Daniel is living by himself and working two jobs. Carla becomes jealous of Daniel. After some convincing from both Carla and her sisters, she moves into her own apartment. After a while Carla and Daniel begin to date and fall in love with each other, they then become sexually active. Daniel’s father gives him money so that he is able to live on his own, but when the end of the semester comes and Daniel has not passed his class, he decides that he no longer wants to support him. His father decides that it is time for him to move to Florida with his mother. Daniel does not want to leave Carla because he has fallen in love with her. Not only are the children trying to overcome a lot, but also so is the family. Each of the family members needs to have the determination to keep pushing through the hard times. It is not always easy to care for a child who requires around the clock care. If it were not for the family members supporting the children, then they would not be where they are today. It is important for each child to have a voice in what they want to do and say. In Lorenzo’s Oil, he was not able to have a voice because the disease had taken over his body, but he mother was not going to let his voice die. She was willing to search for answers so that her son would be able to live a better life and not be in so much pain and misery for the rest of his life. Lorenzo’s mother was always talking to him and she was able to know what his needs were from the way that he looked or made noises before he lost the ability to do so. There was a similar situation in The Other Sister, Carla was not going to let any one step between her and her dreams, and she was determined to live her life to the fullest. Even though her mother did not agree on some of the things that Carla wanted to do, she decided that it was better to let her learn things out the hard way. If Carla has not been able to do the things that she was allowed to do, then she would have missed out on so much of life, and she would not of felt like a “normal”
