Mr. John H. Mcwhorter article “What the World Will Speak in 2115” is packed with educational information and how each language has evolved through time. He goes on and explains the origins of how languages first started and how it continued to evolve throughout the years and how English has endured the test of time. He mentions the Bible’s theory about the “Tower of Babel” (McWhorter, 2015, p.2) and how this was meant to be a godly curse. But if we look at this theory, what was God’s intent? The people’s intention was to build a tower to heaven. God saw that there unity was in one language and by speaking one language they could accomplish anything. In his ultimate wisdom God created a chaotic environment causing them to speak different languages so they would not understand each other. Was this a wise decision? What did God accomplish by creating such a hectic atmosphere when everyone was working well with each other? We can theorize why he did it; however that is why he is God and who am I to question his decision. Mr. Mcwhorter theorizes that some people will argue that English will not be the most spoken language but instead Chinese Mandarin. Mandarin is the official language of China. How can he theorize that comment, when China has six different dialects? According to Britannica Encyclopedia “These languages include Mandarin in the northern, central, and western parts of China; Wu; Northern and Southern Min; Gan (Kan); Hakka (Kejia); and Xiang; and Cantonese (Yue) in the southeastern part of the country” (Egerod, p.1).
