The first Society for the prevention of cruelty to Animals, also popularly known as SPCA was founded in Canada in 1869, “...he first humane society in Canada, founded in Montreal in 1869 …" ("Historique"). While, the original intent of SPCA was not to protect all animals, but to, “…improving the treatment of work horses. Beatings, overloading, starvation, lameness, and harness sores were common cruelties inflicted upon work horses in those days” (“Historique”). Now SPCA has widen its mission to help all animals, “…speaking on behalf of animals wherever there is ignorance, cruelty, exploitation, or neglect” (“Historique”). With improvements in technology commercials have become popular as a way of advertisement. SPCA uses actor Sarah McLachlan as a spokesperson to add credibility to their organization. Sarah McLachlan states in the commercial, “Hi I’m Sarah McLachlan please say you’ll be the answer for an innocent animal suffering right now…” (Hollatronix). When McLachlan talks in the commercial she is holding a dog, showing the viewers that she cares about the organization and genuinely believes what she is saying. In addition to using ethos this commercial also has pathos.
To add more appeal to the commercial the director included pathos in addition to Ethos. The use of ethos is demonstrated through the use of slow music and pictures of abused animals. This commercial is strong in making the audience sympathize for the animals and its sadness appeal. As you watch the commercial you hear the song “In the Arms of an Angel”; which, is a slow song. The use of both the music and the pictures of animals who have clearly been abused create the strong pathos appeal making people more likely to donate. The music in the background is a key factor in provoking emotion from the audience, it makes them stop whatever they were doing and look up at the TV.
