After the war with Athens which they were sent to Ionia to help free the Ionian greeks from Persians. They gained independence over decades ago, gaining wealth in the army. Sparta was hit by severe earthquakes in 462 BC, with many dead. Sparta ask for Athens help, so much debate on the decision Athens aided the Spartans. People started to covet wealth and lost their control. Which they were declining birth rate numbers which was decreasing. They started recruiting children to become Sparta citizen. They had about 9000 Spartiates when they reformed in 640 BC. Many of the Spartans had left but Sparta did not had enough warriors left so the ephors did not impose the death penalty upon them.
