Times change drastically within the world today compared to back in the early ages. Spanking young children was the main source of discipline, before the later 1900’s and early 2000’s although it is still used in some households today. Now spanking is viewed as an act, which causes consequences later within the child’s life. Externalizing behaviors become prominent because of spanking and lead to later implications of distraught for both the parents and the child. Spanking should no longer be used in society today as it can be viewed as child abuse and can implicate further complications in the future. The first decade of a child’s life is critical as development processes occur rapidly over these years. Results of a study show over the first decade of a child’s life there are relations between spanking and externalizing behaviors exhibited by the child (Mackenzie et al., 2014). The use of spanking on a child as physical discipline creates bridges between transitions along the early years of a child ranging from infancy to mobility and communication. Without these essential ideals in a child’s life, functioning daily becomes a challenge (Mackenzie et al. 2014). These externalizing behaviors put others at risk. The furry which build up within the child from being hit provides them with the ability to think hitting is acceptable. This is where the rebellious, aggressive children come from. When children become aggressive or mischief they can hurt someone or something else, through these behaviors. This puts the parents, surrounding environment and the child themselves in harm’s way.
