For our narrative design and space project inside Penn Station, the group would like to utilize the space to tell a story about a family. Through research of Penn station’s history, design and inhabitants, we believe the story we are proposing will connect to various commuters, and will create an opportunity for personal involvement. The narrative centers around a family of three. The family members include a distressed father named Larry, a timid daughter named Anna, and a rebellious son named Nick. The family is traveling through the station with lots of luggage, as they are returning from a long trip together. While buying tickets, food and souvenirs, the family gets separated from each other. The separation functions as an opportunity for …show more content…
They end up meeting up at a Dunkin Donuts that sits adjacent to NJ Transit. The family explains where they have been and exchange laughs. After spending time apart in a new place, they agree it was fun, but they are at ease now being reunited as a unit. The space of the station acts as an exploration zone for three very different people. The station brings out qualities of individuality and adventure in each member. The tourist family is able to feel briefly at home in a bustling environment, engaging in activity of their choice, blending in with the thousands of shuffling customers. The various eateries and retail location points in the station act as destination points for the characters. While the family is lost, they are able to use different points in the station to connect to themselves, and ultimately reunite. The story uses the space to show how and why each character uses the time in the ways they do. The ultimate goal of this project is to create some sort of design installation appropriately using Penn Station, to connect people to the story in an engaging and fun manner. We aim to create a sense of involvement with this narrative

Thousands of people pass by it on a daily basis without even realizing that it is something more than a “pretty train station”. Before we begin, let’s answer the question of just why are train stations so grand?…

Family is a common factor, visibly prominent in people's lives. To many, the definition of family varies. “Families differ in terms of economic, cultural, social, and many other facets, but what every family has in common is that the people who call it a family are making clear that those people are important to them in some way.” Katherena Vermette’s The Break revolves on a community of families whose lives intertwined with one another.…

A space race, fueled by the cold war in the mid 1900’s, could not have been made possible without the core principles founded by Isaac Newton. “Tramps, Hobos, Beats and Crusties” There is something romantic about hearing the sound of a train in the distance. It has a way of enticing the imagination--it conjures up sepia images of hardship and freedom, and leaves us with an unexplained longing. It is as if the railroad links us to our country’s past, a nostalgic reminder that some things never change. In 2008 I spent the better part of a year hopping freight and hitchhiking from Maine to Washington. Although I only rode a handful of trains, I learned a great deal about the culture that surrounds train hopping.…

Personal Statement Almost everyone had a rod in hand as they walked through the main street headed for the pier or docks to try and reel in a tasty morsel for dinner.
