It is a common misbelief that southern states were the only states in the union to own slaves. In fact, four northern states owned slaves as well. These states included Maryland, West Virginia, Delaware and even our nation’s capital Washington D.C. Also, the idea of “all southern states abused slaves” is wrong. Yes, slaves were abused and dehumanized, but not every slave owner in every southern state abused their slaves. Additionally, the idea that slave ownership was the main reason for the civil war is not correct. In fact, the reason for the war was the growing tensions over different political views and different economies. However, slave ownership did have an impact on the growing tensions. Northeast Community Middle/High School does have some-but an extremely small amount-of African American students. The school does not know if they are being made victim of discriminatory acts and racism. Those students may be from the south or have parents from the south, and may see this flag as racist. The flag may be viewed by those students as a white racist pride symbol. However, this is not the case. Students simply do not care. We, as students, know what is racist and what is not. We laugh at the rules. We see this dress code, in its entirety, as a joke. We are not offended by a flag because it is a flag. It is not saying racist words to us, it does not abuse us physically. It should be a student’s choice, actually it should be a student’s right to wear a shirt or sweatshirt that displays this flag. We have the first amendment right, and that cannot be taken
