South Carolina
South Carolina, also known as the Palmetto State, has a history that dates back to the beginning of the country. Its large cities, universities, mountains, and beaches bring visitors every year. Many important people have influenced the state, and even the country. South Carolina is an important state to this nation.
South Carolina was one of the original thirteen colonies, yet its history dates back to 1633. Royal nobles were sent by King Charles I to explore and settle the area. In 1670, the first English settlement was started. The settlement was made at Albemarie Point on the Ashley River, but was moved to Charles Town. Each of these areas are different and have an effect on the state’s economy and tourism. The Coastal Plain region is located along the Atlantic Ocean. This land is flat, but does have some rolling hills. This area is very good for the fishing industry, and also brings in a lot of money because of tourism. Areas like Myrtle Beach, Hilton Head, and Charleston bring more than two million visitors each year. In fact, tourism is the top source of income for the state of South Carolina. The Piedmont region has more rolling hills than the Coastal Plain region. Livestock, poultry, and growing peach crops are a big part of this region’s economy. In fact, South Carolina is one of the top three peach producing states. Cotton used to be a main product from South Carolina, but tobacco and soybeans are now also grown. The Blue Ridge region has many forests that help the state’s paper producing businesses. The many lakes, waterways, and Atlantic Ocean help in the creation of nuclear power for the state. The products created and grown in South Carolina help the state’s economy, but also the economy of the United States. Textiles, paper products, and crops are sold throughout the country. Companies like General Electric and Boeing have assembly plants in South Carolina, and the car company BMW has the only U.S. car making plant in South Carolina. …show more content…
Rain and thunderstorms often occur during hot and humid days. Tornadoes might happen during the Spring and also in November. Temperatures are different in the winter depending on the region. Coastal areas aren’t as cold, but the Piedmont and Blue Ridge regions are colder. In fact, the Blue Ridge region of the state is usually the only area that receives much snow during the winters.
