There are many factors that contribute to one’s health. Diabetes is a common health issue in North America, especially among the South Asian community, who may not be knowledgeable about the condition including treatments required. Whether these individuals are new immigrants to the country or even individuals who have lived in North America for a few years. In today’s society we have more than enough resources to assist individuals with various diseases. This is especially seen in the Western world. The problem lies on whether the South Asian community is educated enough about this health issue. If they are given the chance with the right resources by the health care system, it will help these individuals …show more content…
In the article, “Improving management of type 2 diabetes in South Asian patients: A systematic review of intervention studies”, authors Bhurji, Javer, Gasevic, and Khan (2016) outline that the Western countries and South Asia wanted improvement is the outcome of lipid and blood pressure. The study from India described that there is a reduction in BMI, White Cell and improved diabetes knowledge. There is involvement that is required to improve the glycaemic control of South Asian individuals who live in the Western world. Examples of interventions that individuals should follow is yoga or usage of dance to engage the improvement of health behaviours (p.15). It can be argued that the South Asians community needs to become well informed about their condition of diabetes. It is recommended that these patients become active through activities such as yoga or dance. The care workers need to take an effort to organize a physical activity program for the group. In the article, “A Randomized Trial Assessing the Effectiveness of Ezetimibe in South Asian Canadians with Coronary Artery Disease or Diabetes: The INFINITY Study”, authors Madan et al. (2012) states that South Asian type 2 diabetics are 3 times more likely to get diabetes compared to Caucasians. This disease occurs at a younger age compared to the general population. The primary and secondary prevention strategies allow South Asians to address the high rate of morbidity and mortality associated with diabetes and coronary artery disease (pg5). The South Asian community has a high chance of getting diabetes compared to other ethnic groups. This can be prevented if at a young age these individuals can focus on their health. These individuals can still keep their ethnic cultures and values. Similarly, in the article “Improving management of type 2 diabetes in South Asian patients: a systematic review of intervention studies”, authors Bhurji, N., Javer, J., Gasevic, D., & Khan, N. A. (2016) speaks about a cultural adaptation that is required for the interventions to become adaptable. In a culturally adaptable diabetes program is targeted to Latin American population. The intervention contained a culturally tailored education, exercise (Latin dance) and dietary change compared from their usual care. These adaptations need to include family involvement, food that is commonly consumed in Latin American
