I noticed that in Seven Samurai, Akira Kurosawa uses sound to both compliment a scene and also to juxtapose what we’re seeing to what we’re hearing. I first noticed the contrast of sound to the images on screen in the beginning when all of the villagers are discussing what to do about the bandits and there’s the sound of a bird chirping in the background (5:54). During that scene Kurosawa used actual sound, which is defined by the book as being sound that can be “actual (or natural), in the sense of coming from a real source that we may or may not see” (38). I find this interesting because at first I didn’t think anything of the bird chirping seeing as the villagers were talking outside, but then after going back and watching it a second time
