Thesis statement- For society to thrive peacefully, there are two things that must be recognized. The first is that social and religious law is just as important as government law and secondly, men are not the ultimate bearers of power, respect, and correctness. In light of this, must women be pushed to the point of death, for rulers to recognize this? This essay answers this question in the following outline.
Antigone in the play ‘Antigone’ by Sophocles is the quintessential embodiment of defiance and will power. She does not allow femininity to be the reason for men to walk all over her. She demonstrates complete stewardess in the fight for social justice and what is right, even if it meant being in Creon’s, the King of Thebes, bad books (Lloyd 100).
First, Antigone defies the law issued by Creon by burying her brother Polyneices. Polyneices and his other brother, Eteocles, had engaged in fists against one another, in a contest for the throne. They both died, but Creon had given a befitting burial to Eteocles and Polyneices unburied, for the birds to feed on his flesh. He makes judgments and rulings without considering the consequences they have on other people. He orders that Polyneices not to be buried without considering what his niece Antigone would feel.
